“Knew these guys, and creativity was the only way to move on. They went on to form a band and produce a sound that met every suburban defeat I've ever known. It electrifies and resounds the highs and lows of being in a place and dealing with it. They didn't give in or give up. Their melodies will plank you into privacy and make you come face to face with your reality.” -Adam Johnson

Quite honestly, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Paul Banks has forged a new supergroup to sit alongside Muzz and Interpol for the way the achingly emotional vocal lines cut through the discordant atmosphere of shoegaze synthesised with the sludge of grunge. As the rough rings of choppy acoustic guitar strings from the intro evolve into windingly hypnotic distorted guitars and start laying the foundation to build an insurmountable wall of sound that is constructed in the middle ground of Deftones and My Bloody Valentine, prepare for heart-in-throat immersion from the soundscape which is underpinned by forlorn grit and gyrating gravitas.

- Amelia Vandergast (A&R Factory)

Marking a sharp left turn from their home-studio debut, “Hollowman” is Sleeps While Walking’s first salvo from the professional crucible of Chicago’s Echo Mill. Ghostly synth vapours and fragile piano lines drift like cold breath overhead, weaving an unsettling, almost pretty atmosphere. But lurking beneath is a tectonic shift of dark, grinding guitars and a bassline thick enough to fracture pavement. The only thing holding this glorious, precarious tension together are drums that sound less like percussion and more like declarations of war. They hit with primal force, a constant, punishing reminder of the emotional vortex you’re being sucked into.

- Buzzy Band

channeling a ’90s alt-rock nostalgia while blasting into the cathartic hooky, refrain: “Say it with your chest: ‘I’m no one’s fool.'” Invigorating guitar lines add during the riveting final minute, capping off a success that has become a live favorite for the band, for evident reasons.

- Mike Mineo (Obscure Sound)

The dimensions and layers of Chicago’s Sleeps While Walking is quite remarkable. Their transformation of grunge into, not only a sedating and psychedelic, but a contemplative style is inspired in its novelty and in its creative emergence. In their latest self-titled album, the band explores a horizon of rock; flowing through frames of indie rock and hard rock before sparking a grunge rock fire that is as intense and widespread as a forest fire.

- Apollo's Harp

Sleeps While Walking doesn’t just create music, they build emotional landscapes...The Chicago-based five-piece delivers a sound that’s both delicate and crushing, as if walking a tightrope between despair and defiance. Grungegaze at its finest, combining raw, visceral power with a kind of melancholy beauty that lingers long after the final note.

- Da Da Da Music

Made at that place where a more melodic shoe-gaze-infused sound tempers the gnarly grind of grunge. They also understand that even in such heavier climes, the melody is essential; peel back the musical weight, and underneath it all, you find pop contagion at work. That might sound like an odd thing to say, but go back and listen to Nirvana; I mean, really listen, and tell me that Kurt Cobain wasn’t a pop-head!

- Dave Franklin (The Big Takeover)
